It’s like having the life sucked right out of you Friend
Have you ever been around one of those people that are just so negative that they spread a cloud of misery wherever they go?
Lets face it, the majority of the population spends a good deal of time in a somwhat semi-negative state, but every once in a while you come across someone thats not satisfied with just being miserable, it seems they almost go out of their way to make everyone else unhappy too!
I met one of those people tonight at the video store.
Lucie and I love watching films and whilst before we had Summer we used to go to the cinema at least once per week, alas now its more commonly a weekly visit to our local blockbuster!
As it was a Saturday night, the store was busy, so busy in fact that the queue went all the way from the counter to the back of the store. So whilst I’m waiting in the queue to rent a copy of ‘Last Chance Harvey’ starring Dustin Hoffman (it’s rubbish, don’t get it!), a middle age woman with a face like thunder and her husband joined the queue behind me carrying 4 or 5 DVDs
‘But I don’t like any of these films, and I’ve seen them all!’
‘No you havent’
‘Yes I have, and they’re superhero type films, you know I don’t like those films, why’d you get them?’
and this went on and on and on for the next FIVE minutes;
she didnt like the films,
the type of popcorn they were buying had too much sugar in it,
she hadnt heard from her daughter that day (why is she so selfish?),
the queue was too long (why dont they just put more staff on?),
it was too hot,
why hadnt he changed the bulb in the ensuite like she told him to (it’s not been working for over a week now!)
And then she had a dig at the poor boy at the counter who served her, demanding to know why he couldnt find the DVD she’d picked and why this ‘always happens to me!?’ (he did find her DVD by the way, just not within the first 3 seconds after asking him)
Alas, if I’d been feeling in a more benevolant mood I might have asked her a good quality question to break her state, but I must confess I was actually only too happy to get my DVD and get the hell out of there as fast as I could!
Do you know anyone like that Friend?
Sadly, way too many coaches and trainers also fall in the ‘miserable old bag’ category.
I’m not talking about the odd bad day here, I’m talking about a well conditioned pattern of negativity.
Because as my friend Richard Wilkin’s says ‘Life is a sausage machine’
If you put beef in one end of a sausage machine, you get beef sausages out of the other end
If you put pork in one end of a sausage machine, you get pork sausages
And if you put negativity into one end of your ‘life’ sausage machine, guess what you get out of the other end?
Negativity
Conversely if you put fun, love, joy and laughter into one end of your ‘life’ sausage machine, guess what you get out of the other end?
Fun, love, joy and laughter
It aint exaclty rocket science.
And yet it never ceases to amaze me how many of my fellow coaches and trainers FAIL to apply the ’sausage machine’ principle to attracting new clients to them.
Instead, the sit and bitch about why times are tough, nobody’s got anay money and three thousand other reasons why they will never find another paying client.
Guess what comes out of their sausage machine?

So what’s the solution?
It’s really quite simple
Let’s go back to ‘Rapport 101′
‘People like people who are like themselves or who are LIKE WHO THEY WOULD LIKE TO BE!’
In laymans terms, if you are demonstrating the behaviour and the emotional states your client would like to have, they will feel magnetically drawn to you. And the more you personify those states and behaviours, the more attracted towards you they will be.
So if you want to inspire others to step up, live the life of their dreams and achieve their goals, guess what you need to put into your sausage machine?
Oh and as a byproduct, you get to have more fun, joy, happiness, love and laughter in your life too.
It’s just a thought…

   ‘But I don’t know who to vote for!’
‘How the hell can you not know, it’s blatantly obvious who the best choice is!’
Such went yesterday’s conversation between my wife Lucie and I over probably the most intriguing political race in recent British history.
Like many people, Lucie and I had watched our country’s first ever televised debates between the party leaders with great interest.
Despite thinking of myself reasonably well educated about politics, I was surprised to realise there was an awful lot I didn’t know about the parties, their policies and more critically the ‘facts’ (if such a word can be used in connection with politicians!) about what is actually going on in the UK as we speak.
More importantly, the debates left me absolutely crystal clear on who I should vote for and why.
But on the other hand, Lucie had gone into the debates with the intention of voting for one party and came out completely undecided!
‘How can you not know?’ I asked ‘all 3 parties have radically different policies!’
‘But they all say the same things’ she said ‘just look at this’ as she unfolded 3 pieces of paper in front of me.
I almost couldn’t believe my eyes!
On our oak dining room table Lucie laid out 3 flyers that had come through our door in the past week, one from each of the three major parties canvassing for our votes.
On each one, there were 3-5 major bullet points, outlining the major topics that each candidate stood for in our local district.
BUT EVERY SINGLE ONE HAD AT LEAST 3 OF THE 5 BULLETS IN COMMON!!!
They all pledged to support our local hospital, fight against closure of our local fire station, stop over-development of our local area and support the economy!
The labour and conservative candidates were publically blaming each other for the state of the hospital and the threatened closure of the fire station!
Now I could see why Lucie was confused….
Our local candidates had all failed to STAND OUT in Lucie’s mind and DIFFERENTIATE themselves from the rest of the pack.
And a critical rule of sales goes thus;
‘A Confused Mind Always Says NO!’
And this is EXACTLY the same situation that your potential clients are faced with, when they are considering doing business with you.
Do you STAND OUT from you competition?
I know that you know that you’re different and can make a difference, but the key question is; do your potential clients know?
I mean do they truly know in their hearts, who you are, what you stand for and precisely how you can help them?
We are so bombarded with information in today’s day and age, most people are overwhelmed and spend most of their time walking around in a deep, deep trance!
Your job is to WAKE THEM UP!
Do something radical, be unique, be crazy, be fun, give more, care more, laugh more, love more, but for crying out loud make sure you...
…STAND OUT!
You can’t please everybody, better to shine your light and naturally attract those people who resonate with you message and turn off those who don’t then to dissolve into the background, unnoticed, and never having a chance to make the difference you were born to make.
It reminds me of Marianne Williamson’s quote, as used by Nelson Mandella in his inauguration speech as President of South Africa;
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” Â

              So go ahead today and let your  light shine!
Oh and make sure you go and vote!

I’ve heard it a thousand times before Friend
You want to help people, you’ve got a unique message you want to share to the world.
You’ve done loads of courses, Coaching, NLP, Tony Robbins, Goal Setting and more!
You know how to make a difference in people’s lives, help them to overcome their fears and achieve their dreams.
SO WHERE THE HELL ARE ALL THE CLIENTS?!?
It’s sad but true that most aspiring coaches, trainers and therapists fail to reach the number of people they’d like to.
Despite giving their heart and soul to help the clients they do have, they struggle to make ends meet, let alone change the world.
When I was 20 years old, I was recorded as one of the fastest readers in the world, and not only that, I could teach anyone to DOUBLE their reading speed (with the same or better comprehension) in less than 3 hours.
So I set off around the country, trying to persuade schools to let me work with their children, because I knew if I could change a child’s belief and attitude about learning, it would transform their entire life.
The result of this good intention where astonishing…
Astonishingly BAD!
A little over a year later the business went under leaving me with over £100,000 worth of personal debt on credit cards and loans.
So much for changing the world…
I didn’t realise it at the time, but my mission had failed not because I wasn’t good at what I did, but because I was missing one vital ingredient…
ATTRACTION!
I was going to meetings at schools, one at a time, trying to persuade them to have me come in and work with their kids.
I was chasing them to get they business instead of creating a way to allow them to come to me.
What happens if you try to chase a wild animal?
That’s right, IT RUNS AWAY!
But what happens if you offer them some of their favourite food and sit back and wait?
THEY COME TO YOU EFFORTLESSLY!
That’s why the typical ‘give a free session away’ coaching model is so crappy is because it does not allow you to leverage your time.
Instead, if you truly wish to have a positive impact in the world, you need to take your core message and get it out there in such a way that you naturally attract you’re ideal clients to you.
How do you do that?
In a word, the INTERNET
It’s never been quicker, easier and more enjoyable to attract clients to you than leveraging the internet to get your message out to the world.

I put this post on my facebook wall recently that stirred up a bit of a fuss…
“Most coaches dont get clients, not 4 a lack of skill, but because they were taught
the Free Session model that never worked in the 1st place!”
Put bluntly, the ‘free session’ model (where you give away a coaching session with
the aim of getting them to sign up for more sessions) that most coaching schools
teach as a way for new coaches to get clients is about as effective as a chocolate teapot.
When I first got started in coaching I did literally HUNDREDS of free sessions, with
minimal success.
Every week I would spend HOURS on the phone with prospective clients, giving value,
HOPING that if I just give enough value maybe, just maybe someone would be willing to
sign up for my coaching.
The most devastating thing about it was I did get some success, just enough to ‘keep the faith’ in this ridiculously ineffective and flawed business model, so I would spend another 3 or 4 hours that day giving free sessions to potential clients who;
a) didnt value what I had to offer
b) werent really commited to taking action
and
c) HAD ABSOLUTELY NO INTENTION OF BUYING MY COACHING!
If you want to really make a difference in the world, inspire people and help them to
transform their lives, the free session model is NOT the best approach.
Frankly, you have a better chance opening the Gordon Brown school of charm!
So what is the answer?
You need two things…
1) You need to be able to get your message in front of enough of the RIGHT people
2) You need your message to be influential enough to inspire them to take action
Or to put it another way…
1) You need to be able to get interested people to your website
2) You need to give the massive value in a LEVERAGED way, so the want to spend
money with you!
Historically this was very difficult, time consuming and expensive.
However today, thanks to the internet and social media, it can be quick, VERY quick.
Look, if you really want to help people and get your gift out there, FREE SESSIONS
ARE NOT THE BEST WAY!
(Firstly, they are NOT free, they COST YOU time and energy!)
The most effective way is building a RELATIONSHIP with your potential clients by
ADDING MASSIVE VALUE in a time leveraged way (using Social media) BEFORE you
ask them for money!
That way you can reach the largest number of people possible without it costing you
any extra time.
